Organic Baby-Care

Mila & Mama’s Tried & Tested Organic Baby-Care Products.

Mila is counting down the days until her new baby cousin arrives! She is flat out refusing to call the new little one her ‘cousin’ and proudly states that she is getting a baby sister 😉

With the parents of the new little-one-to-be being first time parents, I started rattling off a list of organic baby-care products that I recommend. As I saw mommy-to-be’s blank face staring back at me, I remembered how the newness of everything that comes with being a first-time-mom can be so overwhelming and confusing. So I told her I would write a list of my tried and tested organic baby-care products.

[/vc_column_text]

Why Organic Baby-Care Products?

When I was expecting Mila I was already only using organic body-care and house-cleaning products so it naturally followed that I would only use organic baby products. As written in my book ‘Mila’s Meals: The Beginning & The Basics’

“Your skin is the largest organ of your body and since it is porous, it absorbs whatever you put on it. If the products you use (both on your skin or around your house) contain harmful ingredients (such as toxic chemicals, colours, and fragrances), those ingredients make their way into your body, your blood and lymphatic system. Essentially, if they are on your skin, you are eating them – which is how and why things like hormone patches and topical pain relievers work!

The skin absorbs approximately 60% of whatever formulation you apply to it.

On average 200 chemicals are being absorbed through the skin everyday. Think about it… add up your daily ‘consumption’ of the chemical ingredients commonly found in shampoo, toothpaste, soap, deodorant, hair conditioner, lip balm, sunscreen, body lotion, shaving cream, makeup, and bum cream!

After analysing 2,983 chemicals used in personal care products, the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health in the US found that 884 were toxic. Furthermore, according to the Environmental Working Group (EWG) “89% of 10,500 ingredients used in personal care products have not been evaluated for safety by the CIR, the FDA, nor any other publicly accountable institution.”

The majority of conventional body care and house cleaning products contain a cocktail of chemicals which are known or suspected carcinogens, neurotoxins and hormone disruptors, allergens, and irritants.

“Putting chemicals on your skin is actually far worse than ingesting them, because when you eat something the enzymes in your saliva and stomach help break it down and flush it out of your body. When you put these chemicals on your skin, however, it is absorbed straight into your blood stream without filtering of any kind, so there’s no protection against the toxin.” – EWG.

The same motto for food applies to anything that comes into contact with you and your little one’s skin/body…. if it has ingredients in it that you cannot pronounce or have only seen in chemistry class, do not use it!

Visit the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep website for more information.

Use the fact that skin is so absorbent to your advantage.

The healing benefits of many foods can be gained by simply applying it to the skin. For example:

  • Onions or garlic in your little one’s socks at night will help fight colds and flu, as will oreganum oil;
  • A few drops of aromatherapy oils in the bath can be used for a wide variety of complaints.

To avoid an unnecessary toxic burden on your little one’s tiny body (and yours), choose certified organic and natural skin care and household cleaning products. Or look for solutions in your pantry cupboard!”

You can find alternative uses for various ingredients in the book chapter “Don’t Just Eat Food”, including beyond-the-kitchen uses for Coconut Oil, Olive Oil, Honey, Lemon, Bicarbonate of Soda, Rooibos Tea, Cinnamon, All Spice, Sesame oil, Banana Skins, and Hydrogen Peroxide.

Now that you know why organic is a smart choice, here it is…

Mila’s & Mama’s Tried & Tested,
Organic Baby-Care Products Wish List!

Washing Powder

As you are counting down the days to your little one’s arrival you are no doubt getting the bedroom and clothes ready. It is important to wash all new (and second hand) baby clothes before putting them on your precious new born.

“Clothing manufacturing expert, Lana Hogue, warns that not putting new clothes through the washing machine straight after you’ve bought them puts your skin a little too close to the harsh factory processes that items often undergo before they reach retailers.” – The Daily Mail.

Chemicals routinely used in the manufacture of new clothes include formaldehyde resin and azo-aniline dyes. New clothes have also often been touched by many adoring new parents as they ooh and ahh over them – the transfer of germs from their hands is something you want to avoid putting on your newborn.

For all my laundry I use Triple Orange Bio-Detergent and now that Mila is 4 years old I wash her clothes with mine.

Triple Orange Bio Detergent

TRIPLE ORANGE BIO-DETERGENT

“The cleanest wash and freshest fragrance guaranteed. Triple Orange™ BIO-DET is a powerful laundry detergent and degreaser which requires NO softener and is PH balanced. Triple Orange™ BIO-DET is 100% bio-degradable, gentle on your fabrics and acts as a softener as well.” – Faithful to Nature

(CLICK ON THE IMAGE TO BUY, OR FIND MORE PRODUCT DETAILS)

When Mila was a baby though I used these Soap Nuts – yes, I was skeptical at first too – but they are incredible! And very cost effective too since you use 5 nuts repeatedly for 5 washes.

Fancy Pants Soap Nuts

FANCY PANTS SOAP NUTS

“A soap nut is a 100% bio-degradable, all natural berry that is an antibacterial and mild foaming cleanser containing high levels of saponins. Soap nuts are not actually nuts at all – they are berries. Soap nuts are highly effective as a laundering agent and do not contain any chemicals. These natural wonders allow you to wash your nappies without using substances that are harmful to babies or to the environment.” – Faithful to Nature

(CLICK ON THE IMAGE TO BUY, OR FIND MORE PRODUCT DETAILS)

You can also make your own natural chemical-free washing powder:

Place 1/2 cup bicarbonate of soda + 1/4 to 1/2 cup salt in the detergent tray. Place 1/2 cup vinegar in the pre-wash and/or rinse tray.

For more ideas on making your own chemical-free, natural cleaning products please visit the Spotless Living Website.

Fabric Softener

I have never used a fabric softener on my or Mila’s clothes. I find that putting the sundried clothes in the tumble dryer for a quick 10 minute cycle does the trick.

Alternatively, you can add some white vinegar to the rinse cycle/tray of your washing machine as it acts as a natural fabric softener (while cleaning your pipes of detergent residue).

Stain Remover

Ah the stains! First it’s the nappy spills (prepare yourself for those!) and then it’s the food! Stay clear of jik and other harsh stain removers by using this Mother Nature Netted Stain Stick.

MOTHER NATURE NETTED STAIN STICK

“This chunky bar is perfect for hand laundering and to rub onto stains. The bar comes in a net bag which works as a scourer. The ingredients are natural and gentle on laundry (leaving no harmful chemical residue on clothes) and kind to your skin. It is also 100% biodegradable making it a great environment friendly option. Try use a soapy water solution as a cloth nappy pre-soak.Faithful to Nature

Nappies

By the time I was pregnant with Mila, my sister-in-law had successfully used cloth nappies for her daughter. I bought some, determined to follow suit. Mila, however, was a tiny baby (weighing only 2,4kg’s) and wore prem clothes for the first couple of months. The cloth nappies were much to big for her (they did fit on her since they are adjustable – but there was more nappy than baby!).  Also, to be honest, I was overwhelmed with feeding every 2 hours (day and night) as well as cleaning the house and doing the laundry as I only had help a couple of times a week – so by the time Mila was bigger and would have been more comfortable in the cloth nappies, there was no ways I was going to add washing nappies on my list of things to do!

But I was determined not to use conventional nappies due to the chemicals they contain, so I made the decision to invest in biodegradable disposables. And when I say invest – I do mean a financial investment because, yes, they are more expensive than conventional nappies and over 2 years, they work out much more expensive than cloth nappies.

There were a few times I ran out them and used conventional nappies while I waited for my order from Faithful To Nature (living in a small town, I had to most things from Cape Town). I noticed 2 things when using the conventional ones:

1 Mila got nappy rash.

2 Mila didn’t sleep well – I don’t have any logical or scientific explanation for this. But when Mila was wearing conventional nappies I struggled to get her to sleep and once she was asleep, she didn’t sleep for long at all.

Bio Baby Biodegradable Disposable Nappies

BIO BABY NAPPIES

“Bio Baby nappies solve the tricky question of whether to use disposables or not, as these nappies are technologically advanced and eco-friendly, made using sustainable and biodegradable materials. Your baby needs the purest care to protect their skin from nappy rash, eczema, and sensitivities. Care for the earth as you take care of your baby’s nappy needs, with gently effective eco-technology.  Adjustable for a snug fit and made from natural hypoallergenic fibres for gentleness, your baby’s risk of skin troubles will be minimised.” – Faithful to Nature

Nappy Sacks

If you think you can try save costs by not using nappy sacks – think again! You really, REALLY, need to seal those dirty nappies in something – the smell is pervasive and intense!

BEAMING BABY BIODEGRADABLE FRAGRANCE-FREE NAPPY SACKS

“Beaming Baby’s biodegradable nappy sacks are the perfect nappy-change accessory; if you use eco diapers, these handy bags will ensure you dispose of them in an eco-friendly way too. Beaming Baby nappy sacks are completely biodegradable and compostable, and won’t leave any fragments or residues behind after they decompose. Wet Wipes

For the first couple of months, I only used cooled boiled water and cotton wool to clean Mila at a nappy change but as we increasingly began to spend more time out of the house and I wasn’t so ‘precious’ about her newborn skin being exposed to products, I started to use wet wipes.

Conventional wet wipes are yet another baby product laden with chemicals such as parabens, artificial fragrances/parfums etc. I also find their smell so overwhelming that your little one ends up smelling like a wet wipe as opposed to your baby! I did try a few different natural brands, but found these the most effective:. Oh, and take up Faithful to Nature on their ‘Buy In Bulk’ offer – you need a pack in the nappy bag, in the car and just about every room in the house! (I still can’t believe in took me a year to realize I should keep nappies and wet wipes in the lounge downstairs as opposed to only on Mila’s changing table upstairs! Wow – how many trips up and down stairs I could have saved myself!)

Organic Bamboo Wet Wipes

PURE BEGINNINGS GENTLE BAMBOO BABY WIPES

“These wet wipes are made from pure organic bamboo fibre, which means they’re 100% biodegradable. They’re also infused with natural ingredients like baobab extract and aloe vera, so they will nourish and care for your baby’s skin. Let’s face it, you probably use more baby wipes for your little one than any other product (besides nappies of course). So it’s wonderful to note that these are safe and non-toxic, they have excellent antimicrobial properties and you can throw them directly onto the compost heap when you’re done!”  – Faithful to Nature

Bum Cream

Say “No” to any bum cream that contains petroleum jelly or petrolatum! Please!

“Petroleum jelly, the main ingredient in Vaseline, is a derivative of oil refining. Originally found coating the bottom of oil rigs in the mid-1800s, it’s a byproduct of the oil industry and therefore an unsustainable resource (read: not eco-friendly).”Huffington Post

It may also be carcinogenic –  the E.U. has already banned many products containing petroleum jelly.

This Oh-Lief bum balm was my go-to bum/barrier cream for Mila when she was a baby. It doesn’t have an overwhelming smell as many other conventional ones do and it works exceptionally well (not only to protect the skin but also helps with the cleaning up of messy No. 2’s that can otherwise stain the skin until bath time 😉 ). I did, however, discover as Mila got a bit older that coconut oil works just as well. Coconut oil also has the added advantage of being an anti-fungal and anti-bacterial (useful if there is any thrush or nappy rash).

Oh-Lief Organic Bum Balm

OH-LIEF NATURAL OLIVE BUM BALM

“Oh-lief natural olive bum balm is simple and gentle and was developed with the intention of preventing nappy rash and soothing inflammation. Oh-lief relies on the healing benefits of nature, keeping it simple is the best for babies which is why ingredients are kept minimal, and each ingredient is carefully selected based on its healing properties. The small recyclable containers are sterilised before being filled and will fit perfectly into your diaper bag.” – Faithful to Nature

Umbilical Cord Treatment

The memory of a 12-hour-old Mila screaming as I applied Surgical Spirits to her umbilical cord with forever be etched in my mind! It was the middle of the night of my first night as a mom, I hadn’t slept in 24 hours and the hospital nurse handed it to me as she insisted I clean the cord while I changed her happy. As I used it and my baby screamed blue murder I not-so-politely asked the nurse to leave me to care for my baby in my own way. I scrambled around in the dark to find the Weeping Wound Powder and all was well again. I continued to apply this powder to the cord over the next few days and the umbilical cord dried up and fell off after a few days – with no more screaming and no sign of infection.

GRAZE & WEEPING WOUND POWDER

Also known as Wecasin Powder – it is a homeopathic remedy that is popular for use in umbilical cord care. Simply apply it when needed to help speed the drying process, as well as knowing the signs of potential infection.” – Birthways

Soap

If you give birth to your baby in hospital you may be encouraged to bath him/her soon after the birth. New research however indicates delaying baby’s first bath for a couple of days has various benefits:

1 Vernix contains proteins that prevent common bacterial infections. Think of vernix as a sort-of natural antibacterial (as well as moisturizing) ointment. Lleaving it on your baby’s skin provides a layer of protection while your new baby’s immune system is getting stronger (and while you may be in a hospital which has various germs floating around).

2 Rather spend the first hours and days keeping your little one as close to you as possible. Taking baby off for a bath a couple of hours after he/she is born not only interrupts this important bonding time, causes your little one stress, interrupts her temperature regulation as well as essential skin-to-skin time which encourages latching and breastfeeding.

In the days before the first bath you can simply top and tail with cooled boiled water or olive oil. Once you are ready to bath your little one I can highly recommend this soap which is what I still use for Mila and myself:

Victorian Garden Fragrance-Free Natural Baby Soap

SHEA BUTTER BABY SOAP – FRAGRANCE FREE
“A fragrance free soap with Shea Butter to care for a sensitive skin.

Victorian Garden glycerin soaps are pH balanced and Hypo-allergenic, formulated to draw moisture to the skin and protect it during cleansing.” – Victorian Garden

I did also occasionally use this, although it did seem to be quite drying on Mila’s skin…

Oh-Lief Natural Shampoo and Baby Wash

OH-LIEF NATURAL OLIVE BABY WASH AND SHAMPOO

“A gentle organic shampoo and wash formulated from olive oil, natural clay and a light scent of Roman Chamomile, which has anti-allergenic and relaxant properties. Perfect for babies!” – Faithful To Nature

Body Cream

My family has very dry skin and I have used aqueous cream on my skin pretty much every day since the day I was born. When I was diagnosed with endometriosis at 27 and began my ‘natural-way’ journey, I was horrified to learn about the parabens that are in conventional aqueous creams and how these are absorbed into the body and act as estrogen (they are called xenoestrogens). The years of aqueous cream may well have contributed to my endometriosis. Many other creams are simply not moisturizing enough or they leave a slimy layer on the skin (which really makes me feel uncomfortable). The best cream I have found and continue to use everyday on both Mila and myself is this one. I love that is has no fragrance so the little ones still smell like little ones and not a product, and when I use it I can add whatever fragrance I choose for the day with natural perfumes or essential oils.

OH-LIEF NATURAL AQUEOUS CREAM

“This amazing skincare product is the first of its kind in South Africa; an aqueous cream for newborn babies that contains no petroleum jellies or mineral oils! Instead, Oh-Lief has combined some of Mother Nature’s most special healing remedies (like beeswax, natural clay and coconut oil) to take care of your precious angel’s sensitive skin. Use it as a wash-off cream for newborn babies, and as an all-purpose lotion for the whole family.” – Faithful To Nature

Organic Baby-Care Product - Aqueous Cream

I do also sometimes use Coconut Oil on Mila’s skin (or mine if I have run out of the aqueous cream).

As written in my book in the “Don’t’ Just Eat Food” Chapter:

“Coconut oil is quickly absorbed – so there is no sticky film clogging your or your little one’s pores. It also soothes psoriasis and eczema. Coconut oil as a body lotion has an added benefit of being a natural sunscreen too! It has an SPF of about 5, which means it will protect the skin and underlying tissues from the damage excessive sun exposure can cause, while still allowing UVB rays through – which is necessary for vitamin D synthesis. (Remember while sun exposure is vital for good health, you must protect your little one from the harsh midday sun using long sleeved swim suits and sun hats).”

I buy the bigger containers of Coconut Oil as it works out more cost effective – but lugging this jar around in a nappy bag would be ridiculous! Simply scoop some coconut oil into a smaller Consol Jar or previously used empty container and refill as necessary. I tend to have a jar of it in every room of the house 🙂

CREDE ORGANIC VIRGIN COCONUT OIL

“Virgin coconut oil has for centuries been used as a remedy by traditional healers to nurture the body, mind and spirit. It is ideal as an all over body moisturiser and skin conditioner especially for sensitive skins. It may be helpful in topical relief for skin disorders such as eczema and psoriasis and after sun relief, through its cooling and soothing properties.” – Faithful To Nature

Shampoo

I’ll be honest – this is not something I have much experience in using on a little baby. Mila really didn’t have any hair for the first year 🙂  I had bought a bottle of this in preparation for washing baby’s hair – but it expired before I had used it all!

Oh-Lief Natural Shampoo and Baby Wash

Now that Mila does have hair (she’s determined to grow it as long as Rapunzel’s and has insisted the Mama does the same), we use this shampoo and conditioner…

“A unique formula that washes away daily toxins and protects hair. The high anti-oxidant content in Marula helps to strengthen the hair while the moisturising capacity of the oil helps to prevent breakages. Bug Repellent

If your little one is born in summer and there are mozzies about, a mosquito net over the cot works very well. If you are out and about however, and want to keep the bugs off, this insect repellent is very effective.

Organic Baby-care Products - Bug Repellent

OH-LIEF NATURAL OLIVE INSECT REPELLENT

“Protects the entire family from mosquitos and other insects. Great to apply before baby goes to sleep, especially during mosquito season. The soft ointment prevents insect bites and relieves the itch. In a handy compact travel-size tin, is perfect to take on holiday!” – Faithful To Nature

Healing Ointment / Nappy Rash Cream

A great general skin healing ointment is always good to have. For the few times Mila had a nappy rash, or when she had mozzie bites or the 3-week mommy-hormone-rash, this ointment worked like a charm.

GREENAWAY’S BABY’S BALM

“Greenaway’s Baby Balm is an altogether natural healing ointment, ideal for baby’s soft and sensitive skin. It combines the healing properties of Comfrey, Calendula, Lavender, Rose-geranium, Jojoba oil and beeswax. It also provides soothing relief for nappy rash and other rashes, eczema, dry skin, insect bites, bumps, bruises, cuts, sores, burns (including sunburn) and sprains.” – Faithful To Nature

Sunscreen

While I am a firm believer in allowing our skin to get some sun exposure so we can absorb the essential nutrient Vitamin D, it is also important to protect the little one’s skin from the midday sun or too much sun. Conventional sunscreens are so full of chemicals the sun protection they offer is outweighed by the toxic load they introduce into the body – rather just keep your little ones out of the sun or covered up instead of using them!

I used the Sunumbra Kids SPF40 Sunscreen on Mila when she was a baby. A couple of things worth mentioning:

1 Yes, it is expensive! But… your little one is, well, LITTLE. So this tube should last you a couple of months.

2 There is a beige tint to the cream – which does leave marks on clothes. While this can be irritating, they are not permanent stains and since the product works so well, I was prepared to put up with it.

Organic Baby-Care Products: Sunscreen

SUNUMBRA KIDS SPF40 SUNSCREEN

“Protect your children from the sun’s rays with this high performance, 100% natural and organic sunscreen. Formulated using a unique combination of plant extracts, it contains no nasty chemical filters or harsh synthetic ingredients. That means this organic sunscreen is gentle enough to use safely on your kids’ delicate skin. Sunumbra’s SPF40 sun cream formula provides super-effective full-spectrum protection from the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays. Did we mention it’s also water resistant for up to 40 minutes? Pop this high-performance mineral sunscreen in your beach bag and protect your family the natural way.” – Faithful To Nature

As Mila is now 4 years old, there are new products on the market which weren’t available when she was a baby. One of them is Oh Lief’s sunscreen which is what I use on Mila now.

Organic Baby-Care Products - Natural Sunscreen

OH-LIEF NATURAL SUNSCREEN SPF30 (BODY)

“This CANSA-approved SPF30 mineral sunscreen has got you and your family covered, when it comes to protecting your skin from the sun’s UVA and UVB rays. Oh-Lief, a trusted natural family skin care brand, has finally added a sun protection range to their much-loved product selection. This broad-spectrum sunblock is made using non-nano zinc oxide, a natural soft mineral that sits on the skin without sinking in. That means the Oh-Lief sunscreen creates a physical “sun-blocking” barrier, protecting your skin without absorbing into your bloodstream. This fragrance-free, water resistant SPF30 sunblock is ideal for use all over your body.” – Faithful To Nature

Hand Disinfectant

I’m all for germs – clean germs that is. A bizarre statement right? Let me explain…

As written in my book ‘Mila’s Meals: The Beginning & The Basics’ in the chapter “Unlearn”:

“Thanks to the work of Louis Pasteur, many of us have been brought up believing that all bacteria and germs are bad and disease-causing pathogens. As a result we attempt to sterilise ourselves, and our children, into a bubble. Huge strides have been made in science and medicine since Pasteur first proposed the germ theory. We now know that the human body is made up of 10 trillion human cells and… 100 trillion bacteria! We literally have a universe of bacteria within us, known us our microbiome, that has a huge impact on our health, our ability to digest food and more…

Over sterilisation can inhibit the development of a healthy gut microbiome in your little one. Let your little one crawl on the floor and eat a handful (or more) of soil from the garden. Actually, this is currently being recommended as one of the best ways to populate your gut – I kid you not! Move over probiotics and fermented foods, we now have SBO’s – Soil-Based Organisms!”

So while I believe exposure to a bit of house dust and garden dirt may be beneficial to your little one, the germs and grime lurking on a shopping trolley or in a public bathroom – not so much! As such it is useful to have a hand sterilizer in the nappy bag so you can quickly “wash” your hands before tending to your little one.

The conventional hand sterilizers and antibacterial soaps contain known carcinogens and should be avoided. These are the products I used and absolutely loved!

Chemical-free Hand Sanitizer

SOPURE TRAVEL PACK FOR BABY PROTECTION

“SoPure is a wonderfully gentle disinfectants and sterilisers that will protect your family against germs and pests of all sorts. The SoPure product range is proudly South African and made with all-natural ingredients;

Keep the nursery clean and your little one safe with these pure and potent natural germ-killers. SoPure products are biodegradable and 100% non-toxic; they’re approved by the FDA, the South African Department of Health and the South African Department of Agriculture. The company’s nursery disinfectant won the Baby Expo’s Product Innovation Award in 2011.” – Faithful To Nature

I'm excited!!! Mainly because I'm expecting my first in November and can honestly not wait but also because this giveaway is totally what I'm into. We decided to only use economic, clean and natural products for baby and I've been checking out quite a few of these products already. We are also into eating a very healthy wholefoods diet so the book looks amazing! And besides who doesn't like a giveaway?! (Especially if it can save you a few cents )
