This is me – Catherine Barnhoorn – mama to Mila (now 9 years old!), Integrative Nutrition Health Coach and author & publisher of the now multiple award-winning nutrition and cookbook ‘Mila’s Meals: The Beginning & The Basics’.⁠⁠
⁠⁠
In 'my previous life' (that is, before I became a mom) I was a graphic designer, marketing manager, brand client service director and branding consultant in London, Johannesburg and Cape Town. After an armed home invasion in Joburg I moved to Knysna to “cocoon”. It was there that I met Mila’s dad, got married and fell pregnant with Mila.⁠⁠
⁠⁠
While pregnant I went into premature labour (at 26 weeks) and was sent to bed-rest for 10 weeks. I wasn’t even allowed to sit up – so that was the end of my branding work -or any work for that matter.⁠⁠
⁠⁠
Various health challenges in my life (most notably endometriosis and candida) always had me turning to food for a solution. But it was after the birth of Mila and the severe eczema I developed on my hands that I really paid attention. After noticing that Mila reacted badly to the same foods as I did (even while she was still breastfeeding), I made the decision to raise Mila on a “free-from” diet – that is, free from gluten, sugar and dairy - since this cleared up my eczema and took away her colic. When I couldn’t find a cookbook which catered to feeding a baby this way, I set about creating one myself.⁠⁠

And now here we are… a miscarriage, a divorce, a new profession, 8 book awards, a move to Cape Town and 8 years later…⁠⁠
⁠⁠
So very different from when I first published my book and from when started this page. So very different from when I last posted a photo of me – yes… I’m owning the grey, the magnificence of being 45 and Change of Life –that’s right, menopause!⁠⁠
